Jazzy Kim Jorgensen || Sir Reginald Farnsworth

Here's a buddy of mine from the Berkeley Ukulele Club (Held at Mike DaSilva's ukulele worksop & studio in Berkeley, California) Kim is a teacher and real methodical in his studies. He latched on to Glen Rose's Jazzy Ukulele training and has really taken off with it. Kim, as his alter ego -- put on a good show.

doogey9 || Cryin' Holy Unto The Lord (Skiffle)

Todd whether as Doogey9 or Brother Sonny has been one of my favorites for a long time. He's an advocate of Simple and Soulful music. His music looks simple but it always has some flair and he's got a great country soulful voice.

Skiffle. What is skiffle?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skiffle

The origins of skiffle are obscure, but are generally thought to lie in African-American musical culture in the early twentieth century. Skiffle is often said to have developed from New Orleans jazz, but this has been disputed. Improvised jug bands playing blues and jazz were common across the American South in the early decades of the twentieth century, even if the term skiffle was not used to describe them.

They used instruments such as the washboard, jugs, tea chest bass, cigar-box fiddle, musical saw, and comb-and-paper kazoos, as well as more conventional instruments such as acoustic guitar and banjo. The term skiffle was one of many slang phrases for a rent party, a social event with a small charge designed to pay rent on a house. It was first recorded in Chicago in the 1920s, and may have been brought there as part of the African American migration to northern industrial cities.

The first use of the term on record was in 1925 in the name of Jimmy O'Bryant and his Chicago Skifflers. Most often it was used to describe country blues music records, which included the compilation "Hometown Skiffle" (1929), and "Skiffle Blues" (1946) by Dan Burley & His Skiffle Boys.[5] It was used by Ma Rainey (1886–1939) to describe her repertoire to rural audiences.[1] The term skiffle disappeared from American music in the 1940s.

Johnny Cash Strum? Okay I need to do some more research.

KRISTA MUIR singing in French

MUDCAT CAFE

It may just be the "Oh, Dad" type humor. But I love songs with goofy lyrics. I don't know how I came across this topic of Possums in Songs but I thought these two songs to be LOL material. Now I have to find out some chords for these gems!

These songs where found on Mudcat Cafe' and I hope to find more tunes from this site so I wanted to have a post on this site, http://mudcat.org/threads.cfm

FIVE POUNDS OF POSSUM
http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=42150

CHORDS : http://underwoodfamily.net/songlist/pages/00116.html
LISTEN : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyMxs5GvonU&feature=related

.
My children are hungry and my dog needs a bone.
I got laid off and I'm just drivin' home.
When up in the road ahead much to my delight
There's five pounds of possum in my head lights tonight.
.
CHORUS:
There's five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight.
If I could run him over everything would be alright.
We'll have some possum gravy. Oh, what a beautiful sight!
There's five pound of possum in my headlights tonight.
.
Won't have to clean no chicken. won't have to open no cans.
Just a little bit closer and I'll have him in my hands.
I think it's time to go now from dim to bright.
There's five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight.
.
CHORUS
.
Oh Lord, I think I missed him so I slam on my brake lights.
I think I'll turn this truck around and steer more to the right.
There I think I see him, his red eyes a fright.
There's five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight.
.
CHORUS

BEST FRIEND
http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=21395
.
CHORUS
The best friend I ever had has run off with my wife
And left me here alone to face the changes in my life
The best friend a man could have has stole my wife somehow
I never liked him much before but Lord, I love him now
.
He's the one who'll get to feel Her warm and tender touch,
Tho if she treats him like she did me, he won't feel it much

In time he'll come to realize the nature of his luck
And he'll love her like a possum on the highway loves a truck
.
CHORUS
.
For him to run away with her he must love her a lot
I'd wish him all the best but now he's stuck with what he's got
He didn't have to sneak her off, I would have helped 'em pack
But he'll still be my best friend, long as he don't bring her back
.
CHORUS^^

RobJamesPaynter || Hurricane - live cover - Ukulele

RJP wrote...

Hope you enjoy this cover of Bob Dylan's Hurricane. Performed with some talented students at the school where I teach Chemistry. The History department runs a Vietnam Day and as part of the day they have a concert, we were the opening act. It was a lot of fun.

tUnE-yArDs

I thank Grumpy Coyote for posting this over on the Uke Crazy Bitches blog site. Talk about getting out your Bari and jamming: Merrill Garbus is fantastic! I have taken liberties to paste it here with other brethren Baritone videos.

Why is the sound hole covered up? 3 drummers!

Hippomaiden: Come Back When You Can (Cover)

Emily, seems to put so much emotion into each of her songs. The www.theseashanty.net has been abuzz on HB since hearing her hippomaiden productions. Now whenever I hear her sing I think of a young lass waiting on the shorelines for her love to come back. It took me a while to really listen to hippomaiden but now HB is definitely a fan.

MEL BAY Book: Parking Lot Picker's Songbook (Guitar Edition)

I made a trip to one of my favorite instrument store haunts: The 5th String, in Berkeley, California. Came across this book that is meant for guitar but more than half of the songs are played on the D-G-B-E strings. It has a nice spiral binder so it can lay flat. Here's a small clipping of a song to show what I mean.

Bass Clarinet & Baritone Ukulele

The clarinet/baritone ukulele duet above makes quite a good sound. This YouTuber goes by the name "Instrument Maniac." I liked this next video but it is Guitar / Flute / Cello. Thought I might want to look at it later. Nice arrangement and beautiful scenery.

Blue Velvet

John Kavanagh || Tubas in the Moonlight

I had only known John Kavanagh through his wonderful music. We passed a few e-mails when I wanted to purchase his parlour music CD. I shared the CD with Steven Strauss and he also contacted John and sent him a copy of his UkeBox Music CD. John lived in far off Nova Scotia, Canada. Through the few YouTube videos I had seen his spirit with his friends, as a music teacher, and as gifted musician.

This next video isn't a Bari video but it is a memorial to a man with a Bari-sized heart. I think this joyful song says it all about the man.

Jon Braman || Don't Look Back

Michelle Blades

Always original even in a performance of a cover song.

Added 7-21-10

I have been listening to Michelle and this song seems to me to be of that wistful Sea Shanty type but in the middle there's a short excursion into some Gypsy caravan. I have noticed that a few members of http://www.theseashanty.net/ have been stopping by - Welcome to you!

CLIFF EDWARDS || UKULELE IKE || WESTERN MOVIES (Thanks to Terry C. in Australia)

Today, I woke up to a wonderful surprise of an e-mail from contributor Terry C. from Australia. Terry has provided Humble Uker blog articles on two of his loves: Martin Ukuleles and Ukulele Ike / Cliff Edwards over the last two years. He has now sent me links to several YT video links from later in Cliff's movie career - The Spaghetti Western phase - and the ukulele has been supplanted with the 4-string tenor guitar. What a great treat, enjoy!

CJ Hoyle Music || Sweet Pea (1966)

This is the Sweet Pea before the Amos Lee Sweet Pea. I like the way that Canadian CJ Hoyle combines soprano and baritone ukuleles. I like peruse other videos from each YT'er and CJ has several videos were he combines his video and music sync. For instance, he does The Archie's song Sugar Sugar on Mandolin and water-filled glasses.

Along with this video CJ wrote...

"Earlier this week I picked up a new set of strings for my baritone ukulele. Although this is my first video that features baritone ukulele I have actually had the instrument for many many years, and it was the first stringed instrument I ever learned. However, after getting my first guitar I lost interest in the old baritone uke, and removed many of it's parts attempting to invent new stringed instruments. Now, about 5 years later I've finally managed to gather back together all of the parts and can finally use my baritone uke again."

Mallu Magalhães (Brasileira) || Make it Easy

I was looking at the Ukulele Brasil Blog and found this posting of young Mallu who also plays the baritone ukulele. Both of the songs here are sung in English but I would recommend listening to some of her other songs in Brasilian Portuguese because it is a very melodic language.

Baritone Stories by Jake Wildwood

Here's one of the pictures from Jake Wildwood's Antebellum Instruments Site. Jake is the genius of restoration and a person that enjoys playing and tinkering on a variety of instruments. He also likes to photograph and document his work. This one has struck my fancy since I have one of these 60's era Harmony Bari's. For more info, see...

Julie Vaughn - Awesome Voice - Subtle Jazz Baritone

Julie sent me a link to her other YouTube page which has plenty of videos of her other love -- fish. Those that swim so serenely in the pond and you just have to stop and watch. Julie is a skillful musician and a baritone ukulele player. Her voice is so powerful that the subtle baritone jazz chords just accent her voice perfectly. This is the second time I've featured Julie on HB and I have now added her to the Baritone Player's list. (I hadn't retraced every post yet -- so some players are missing still.)

I you want to see Julie's fishy video, here it is...
