Todd Baio, aka, Doogey9 or Brother Sonny, has been a friend and encourager of Humble Uker and Humble Baritonics blogs. Todd blends his solid singing voice and many of the old-time songs with his string music stylings. He's a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and has a plethura of great videos. His love of simple and soulful music is clearly displayed in his numerous videos.

I asked Todd if he could share a couple of photos of himself with his Baritone Ukuleles and he has obliged. This is the first of the two photos that he sent me. I will save the second photo for a future posting of Todd's new recordings. There is a simplicity to the music but Todd always adds his knowledge and skillful fingerings to each arrangement. I think that this photo shows Todd's very contemplative side.

I'm glad that she bought the Bari -- it is much lighter to carry than a piano.

The 'G' Word Will Not be Used Here...

I was ooogling my google thing and found this thread about how musicians doing a jam or recording session would feel about someone pulling out a Baritone Ukulele. There were several threads but this one seemed the most inspired and playful...

Bonjour! Some of you know that I regularly play the BARITONE UKULELE at sessions. It has caused some consternation at times due to it not being a full on established ‘trad instrument’ but the popular image of the UKE is troublesome. I think a lot of prejudice against the ukulele is based on the misunderstanding of which instrument one means. The first instrument to come to most people’s mind on the mention of ‘uke’ is the small treble or concert size instruments. This was the one played by Tiny Tim. They can be cheap and toy-like and because they can be purchased in different colours and sizes (e.g. Pink Flying Vee/ Sponge Bob/ Pineapple shaped et cetera) and are suitable for kids to learn on, ukes tend to lack a serious image. This is unfortunate as even the most modest treble uke played well can have a poignant sound and be quite beautiful. Unfortunately most session go-ers wouldn’t know a treble form a tenor from a baritone. Last night a guy asked me if I was playing a tenor guitar (which has no such image problems!).

Anyway... The baritone is well suited for trad Irish backing; more so than the six string devil (SSD) in my opinion. It has gut or nylon strings which give it a gentler though more responsive touch than the steel strung ‘other instrument’. (Uke players never use or say the ‘g’ word by the way.)

The tone can be quite harp like and one can reflect the playing of the harp at times. With a little finger picking and judicious bass selection you can (strangely!) also emulate a piano-like backing- the timbre can be similar. You can of course scrub away and copy the syncopated ‘Bo Diddley riddums’ and so forth that are so popular with the SSD botherers. A gently thumb strummed staccato chord on the offbeat can also mimic a box basses. It only has four strings (D G B E- same as the top four on the SSD) the bottom string being a D. This of course is handy in a majority of trad Irish tunes. The four string set up leads to instinctive modal chord selection. It is also QUIETER, even when spanked. I believe this makes it rather more polite in most session situations, especially the smaller group of people one.

And another thing: they are small and light to cart around! (Unlike the large piece of wood that is the six string twangle beast!

I just received my recent purchase of Fretted Friends The Baritone Ukulele Chord Bible 2,160 Chords by Tobe A Richards. First of all it has a first class appearance and a nice quality spiral binding that allows the book to lie flat. This book has a VERY FULL range of chords, for example in C:

C, Cm, C7, Cm7, C0, Co7, C-5, C+, C5, C6, Cm6, Cmaj7, Csus2, Csus4, C7sus4, Cm7-5, Cadd9, Cmadd9, C6add9, Cm6add9, Cm(maj7), Cmaj7-5, Cmaj7+5, C9, C7-5, C7+5, C7-9, C7+9, Cm9, Cmaj9, C11, C13 (There are 3 of each of these). And then in the back there are additional major SLASH chords for bass notes: C/C, C/Db, C/D, C/Eb, C/E, C/F, C/F#, C/G, C/Ab, C/A, C/Bb, C/B.

This book is more than a standard chord book there are also several pages of useful player friendly information.



They requested feedback and I really appreciate the depth of chords and the slash chords. The slash chords are frequently noted on guitar sites and now I have a good reference. Also each of the chord boxed indicates:1, F3, 3, S5, 7, 9, etc.

Pages 88-91 shows a collection of 48 moveable chord shapes. Pages 92-93 is called The Ukulele Family Factfile: Akulele, Baritone, Braguinha, Cavaquinho, Charango, Concert Ukulele, Guitarlele, Rajao, Re-Entrant Tuning, Soprano Ukulele, Taropatch, Tenor Ukulele, Timple, Tiple, Ukulele, Ukulele-Banjo, Venezuelan Quatro. There's really a lot of info on these two pages, because the font is quite small.

Lil' Rev. || New Hal Leonard Project: Baritone Ukulele

You may recognize Lil' Rev in this video and notice that he's not playing a Baritone Ukulele either. But I've seen him a few times in Berkeley and Santa Cruz. Rev has always wanted a blog and I am helping him get started on his own blog, Fountain of Uke. He's definitely one of my favorites and I've posted several of his videos over on Humble Uker. I have seen him perform with a beautiful Bari made by Tony Graziano from Santa Cruz. Been trying to get a picture of him posing with that Graziano Bari to share with you.

Rev just sent me a brief e-mail saying, "You will be glad to hear that my publisher just approval my proposal for my next series of books! The Hal Leonard Baritone Ukulele Method Book Series! Very Cool! I will start this book in 2011 and it will hit the streets in 2012." He's a multi-instrumentalist, great person and teacher. I have each of his ukulele books and I really like the way that he builds a solid playing foundation of skills. I have always purchased the book with the CD's and I believe that Hal Leonard books are quite reasonably priced.

Lil Rev is a very skilled teacher, and his personality comes across on the CD's just like when you meet him in person. I am hoping that the Baritone book doesn't start from square one because his previous books do that for the GCEA tuned ukulele. Or if it does need to start at the beginning perhaps it can be enlarged to pick up some more intermediate tunes with thirds, or a chord melody tune, a blues tune, a slide blues tune, another folk tune, a bluegrass favorite, etc... (I guess I'm getting greedy) HU

P.S. Lil Rev has two other books that I'm waiting to purchase: the Fountain of Uke Songbook (gCEA) and 101 Licks for the Ukulele (gCEA)

Thanks for writing. I think your blog is great. When I first saw you feature my playing, tears came to my eyes. It's amazing what validation does to the spirit. I started in music as a horn player, focusing on the trumpet. After years of playing I found I was enjoying music less and less, even though I was playing in a great funk band. Three years ago my sister-in-law bought me an Oscar Schmidt soprano uke for a Christmas gift. It wasn't long before the trumpet was collecting dust. I couldn't put the uke down. I could practice for hours at any time of the day without driving my neighbors crazy.

Since picking up the uke I rediscovered my passion for music and have expanded my musical experience by starting to write songs. When I found the baritone, I had found an instrument that spoke to me. It's amazing how much joy can be found in a cheap Harmony Baritone. I feel very strongly that music has a healing, transformative power and I believe the ukulele has an important place in the arsenal of promoting peace and love. Thank you for your blog spotlighting this beautiful instrument. Please feel free to use this correspondence (or parts of it) in your blog if you feel it would fit.

I notice that Mudgie069 sometimes describes things opposite to the conventions that I have used here in Humble Baritonics. He says the Baritone is the same as the low (as in closest to the ground) 4 strings of the Guitar and I have carried the convention that these are the high (higher pitch) 4 strings. Also conventional numbering of the strings is counting from the floor up 1,2,3,4 but he sometimes counts in reverse starting with 1 at the top (closest to your nose). Enjoy the tutorials, he's got the body of a god!

There's not much to be found directly for the Baritone Ukulele so the largest source of reference comes down from guitar information or up from ukulele information. Ledward Ka'apana || Borrows Maddog's Uke

Here's another one of my diversions that could easily be posted over on Humble Uker Ramblings but I have shared Ledward there before and I am mesmerized by his skill. Ledward is a joy to listen to. E Ku'u Morning Dew is one of may Hawaiian favorites and my father, Stanley W. used to play Blue, Blue, My World is Blue on the Hammond Organ. 14:22 of Ledward's mastery is a treat. The borrowed uke belongs to Bob Rainey who is my friend over at the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz. Hearing the volume on this one makes me want to get an amp hook up on Bari.

"YT comments... Before a concert at Don Quixote's in Felton California, Bob (Maddog) Rainey showed Led his new carbon fiber Blackbird 'ukulele. Led was favorably impressed with the sound and decided to play it during the concert. I joined three individual song clips together to show how much Led enjoyed playing it. I tried focusing on the headstock at the end of each song, not trying to show the Blackbird logo, but to show the white cat's head that Maddog added to his 'ukulele, in honor of his cat "Bratwurst". Ya gotta love Maddog!!"

Ledward's music reminds me of Prairie Home Companion's Garrison Keillor's story telling about Lake Wobegone. Garrison would tell a nice little story and get you completely off track and then "poof" some how you're right back were you started.

I have had a couple of e-mail conversations with the gentlemen from The Netherlands about the song Red Lips Kiss My Blues Away. They just let me know that Doctor Dick plays another version of the baritone that uses the low 4 strings of the guitar rather than the high 4 strings. They call it the bass-o-lele. Here's a photo...

"Hello Jeff, I play the baritone uke but . . . . not as a baritone ! I call it my bass-o-lele. I have the four low strings of a classical guitar on my bariton and play bass on it. The idea is that the gap between a normal bassguitar and a soprano uke is to big. The gap between my bass-o-lele and a uke is the same as between a basguitar and a guitar.
