Yva Las Vegass: Tiny Desk Concert [Venezuelan Cuatro]

Published on Oct 10, 2012 At NPR Music, we get stacks of CDs in the mail, as well as countless links to music streams, from bands trying to stand out and get some attention. It's safe to say that we all share similar previewing procedures: At some point, we just sit and listen.

What are we listening for? I can't speak for the others, but I'm constantly in search of music I haven't heard, but which sounds as if it's been in my life forever. That's exactly what happened when I put on Yva Las Vegass' album, I was born in a place of sunshine and the smell of ripe mangoes. I was knocked out by the way she infuses Venezuelan folk traditions with a punk aesthetic. I heard songs as allegories, songs that told stories and songs that felt like deep primal screams, all accompanied by a traditional Venezuelan cuatro — a small stringed instrument similar to a ukulele.

At the NPR Music offices, Las Vegass weaves magic with her presence, her playing and especially her voice. You can't quite see her cut-off jeans and Chuck Taylor high-top sneakers behind Bob Boilen's desk, but in attitude and style, Yva Las Vegass is punk-rock through and through.

Buke & Gass || NPR: Live From (Le) Poisson Rouge

Modified baritone ukulele and bass. Wild!

Sitting down on stage isn't typical of rock bands, but Buke & Gase is neither typical nor really a rock band. Watching Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez perform feels more like witnessing a divination, as two solemn figures huddle over strange objects, stomp their feet and chant with an intense and eerie focus. Their band was the outlier at this NPR Music-sponsored concert — recorded live Wednesday at (Le) Poisson Rouge in New York City during the week of the CMJ Music Marathon — as the only act to play all live instruments (the eponymous baritone ukulele and hybrid guitar-bass, plus a smattering of foot percussion) and doing anything that could credibly be called singing. Still, it's clear from this set what the duo shares with its counterparts in Wednesday night's lineup, Death Grips and Flying Lotus: an arsenal of abrasive sounds and hammering beats that pulse away until their hidden subtleties emerge. When Buke & Gase had finished and DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad took the stage, he asked how many bassists, guitarists and drummers were in the crowd. "They just put you out of work," he said, smirking. "Fifteen years at Juilliard, and damn." Set List "Hiccup" "Cyclo" "Misshaping Introduction" "Sleep Gets Your Ghost" "Tending The Talk"

Garret Baker || I Leave You Go

Garret is the master of melancholy. I have been listening to his music for about three years and I'm always thrilled to hear another (especially on the bari!) But Garret also plays guitar, banjo and GCEA ukulele.

He writes,
"I'll leave you go", is a parting phrase used in Dublin, but I don't really know about elsewhere. This a demo of a new song on the baritone ukulele.http://www.facebook.com/garretbakermusic

Jethro writes...
"Here I cover a pretty popular tune by Neon Trees...First time using the raunchy guitar solo effect in a video with the baritone ukulele. I'm expanding my horizons, trying to record decent renditions of more recent songs. I apologize to the fandom of Neon Trees who feel I don't live up to expectations. A quick look at my YouTube channel, and you'll see I've recorded more songs from the 1940s through the 1970s than anything else! Haha! But here's something more up-to-date. Enjoy!"

Uke4U2 || Cielito Lindo (Baritone Ukulele Instrumental)

Unfortunately, I have been brainwashed by my own American commercialism to know this song as "Aye Yi Yi-Yi, I am the Frito Bandito." I have wanted to sing this song in Spanish and strum along for a while. When I was on a cruise of the Mexican Riveira, we had a tour of old town Mazatlan and our tour guide sang Cielito Lindo so beautifully...

Justine Lucas (sings to plants) || Howl (Original song with Bari-Uke accompaniment)

Desirae Garcia || Dyin' To Break Your Heart

I enjoyed hearing Desirae sing in Santa Cruz with the Haunted Windchimes earlier this year. She almost played my bari when she broke a string on her Vega bari uke. Such a sweet singing voice and those tapping toes. Lovely background in that Minnesota barn. Here's a beautiful song that I'll want to hear over and over again...
